Character Design in a Fantasy Setting

I just recently started on character design which has always been a bit of a weak point of mine. Having a character be ridiculously incompetent is generally bad but making a Mary Sue is worse. Some resources i have been looking into to make my NPCs seem realistic and memorable.

I'm still looking for advice on the creation of realistic characters and am spending time rereading novels or watching movies to get a good idea on how others have designed their characters.

  3. Appearance is an easy way to make them different, but there are idiosyncrasies too. Hand movements, or how a person stands. Do they make eye contact during conversation? Do they smile openly or are they self conscious about their teeth? Do they kick at the dirt? Do they avoid stepping on cracks as they walk? Are they jumpy, or are they so laid back they're nearly slow to react? The list can go on. This from a professional wall flower and a writer.

  4. When creating characters of any kind I prefer to base them off people I know in real life, pick and chose attributes from them and feed them into my characters.

I hope you have some interesting friends and coworkers. :)

  8. i wanted to make it rp heavy where the enemies would be at a level far beyond that of the players so it isnt just go in and kill x goblins/gnolls more like how i am told the cthulu rpg works

and the system was most likely going to be a D12 system called Cychosys which i got a chance to play in a game DM's by the writer of it and i think it can work fairly well for a campaign that is mainly rp and skill usage.

  11. i like dnd and the d20 system but combat feels pretty slow and clunky and 3.x dnd favors casters over physical damage dealers
